An estimate template is a pre-formatted document for giving a client an approximate price for a job before the full scope is fixed. It includes itemized costs for labor and materials, a total, and a note that the final price may vary.

An estimate is an educated approximation that can change as the work is defined; a quote is a fixed price that is generally binding once accepted. Use an estimate early in the conversation and a quote when the scope is clear.

A good rule of thumb is ±10–15%. If your estimate could vary more than that, say so explicitly and explain which factors (site conditions, material prices) could move the number.

Most service businesses offer free estimates as a sales tool. Charging is reasonable for complex jobs that require significant design or diagnostic work — just say so upfront.
